Come “apprentice” in the art of ancient metalworking techniques with Florentine master Davide Bigazzi in his native Tuscany. Learn chasing, repoussé, and tool-making in an intimate and inspirational setting in Pian Di Sco, a small village in the Chianti hills just south of Florence. The workshop, held in his Tuscan studio, will offer students the chance to study one-on-one with Davide and learn about the land that inspires his designs. Students stay in a rustic Italian farmhouse and feast together daily. The course also includes a day trip to Florence to see works by Benvenuto Cellini and other Italian master metalsmiths and sculptors. Both beginners and experienced students are welcome!
Class size is limited to six students to allow maximum interaction between student and instructor. During this intensive, hands-on workshop, students will develop basic to advanced skills in chasing and repousse. Each lesson will offer an informal lecture covering Italian culture, traditions, and silversmithing history. Various other traditional techniques will also be incorporated with the goal of developing a completed jewelry or hollowware piece. Personal expression and individual artistic design will be highly encouraged. Students will also learn to forge, harden, and temper high quality chasing tools. Copper sheet will be supplied and sterling silver will be available for purchase.
Class will run from 10am until 1pm, when there will be a break for a leisurely lunch. Class will then continue for four hours before the evening meal.
Every summer Davide returns to Florence, city of Renaissance splendor, to reconnect with his cultural and artistic heritage. The workshop includes a guided day trip to Florence to see works by Benvenuto Cellini and other Italian master metalsmiths and sculptors. Private transportation and entrance fee to the Museo degli Argenti are included.

Breakfast and dinner will be served at Renato’s farmhouse on this day. Participants will be free to explore and eat in Florence in the afternoon. Comfortable shoes will be a must for this jaunt in the city.
Lodging is arranged in a comfortable, private farmhouse (“Renato’s”) that reflects the character of Tuscany. Immersed in nature, the farmhouse offers a creative, spiritual home for students. Three single and one double occupancy bedrooms are available, as well as 2 kitchens and 2 bathrooms to share. A large garden with panoramic views of olive groves, grapevines, and the rolling Tuscan hills is perfect for relaxing and encouraging creativity. It’s just a short walk to Davide’s bottega and the town center.
Homemade fresh-from-the-farm Tuscan cuisine will be prepared daily and served in the garden. Italians regard food not just as a necessity but also as an important ingredient of life. Meals are generous and enjoyed leisurely with wine and conversation.
The price of the workshop package starts at $2,400. Single & double occupancy are limited and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. All rooms are unique and prices vary accordingly.
Note: Price is all inclusive to accommodate workshop participants only. Please inquire about accommodations nearby for traveling companions.

"Thank you for your wonderful hospitality, delicious food, & fantastic tutoring. The week spent with you & my new friends in Tuscany was a highlight of my four month trip to Europe."
~ Anna Davern - Melbourne, Australia
"Davide is not only a master artisan, he is a superb teacher! Under his patient and compassionate supervision, I, a person with no previous experience in metalwork, was able to master a number of skills and produce a piece of work that gives me pride and satisfaction. My experience in the Tuscany workshop has opened a whole new world of future possibilities for artistic expression."
~ Norma C. - California, U.S.A.
"It really was a dream come true for me to be working with silver under the guidance of a master smith, and to see and feel the metal bend, grow, and take shape in response to my efforts. The atmosphere you provided combined challenge and comfort, humor and hard work. Your kindness, warmth, and generosity are some of the intangibles that made this learning experience so positive for all of us, and I thank you for all you have done to introduce me to the silversmith's craft and to the traditions of Tuscany."
~ William K. AKA "Guillermo No Formaggio
"It was a magical experience. Not only to study with such a creative, caring, and patient master, but also to stroll the lanes of Tuscany and partake some of the most delicious food with such lovely and charming people. I can’t thank you enough!"
~ Robin Welles – Palo Alto, California
"We had so much fun!(and learned alot too!) This was, without
doubt, the best workshop I have taken. Davide is clearly a master
of the metal and technique and was generous in sharing his skills
with us. For me, taking a workshop away from home was perfect-I didn't
have to pack up my tools from my studio to take somewhere else, which
forced me to work at Davide's studio and therefore,he was able to
watch my technique and correct me on the spot. The days went by so
fast! And ,of course, I can't say enough about how appreciative I
was of Stephania's cooking and preparing special treats for me with
all my dietary restrictions. I certainly couldn't have enjoyed the
local cuisine without her! The meals were all delicious and the company
was great. I don't remember ever laughing so much! What a great experience!"
~ Lori Baltimore, MD
"The workshop was absolutely a wonderful experience:
-Davide is an excellent teacher, very patient, caring, has great
attention to detail, good sense of humor… -Elisa is on top of things always...
very good at getting all the organization done and taking care of things in
general. -The farmhouse is relaxing and is in a wonderful setting.
-Renato, Franco, Stephania..what a sincere and charming group of
people. Stephania made each meal a feast… something to look forward to in great
~ Alev Foster City, CA
"This was my third workshop with Davide and my second trip to Italy for the
weeklong Tuscany workshop. The small class size and the support and expertise
from Davide are excellent. He encourages me to stretch my developing skills
at just the right level while helping me succeed so I leave with successfully
completed pieces I can be proud of. The workshop in Tuscany is a special experience
with total immersion in the art."
~ Dianne - Warrenville, IL
